A U.S. citizen with Russian origins named Gene Spector has been arrested in Moscow under the suspicion of engaging in espionage, as reported by Russian news agencies on Thursday.
The agencies did not provide specific details regarding the charges. However, based on information from RIA, Spector had previously received a 3.5-year prison sentence in 2022 for his involvement in the bribery of an assistant to the former Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Arkadiy Dvorkovich.
The court proceeding took place in a closed-door session due to the classified nature of the case materials, as stated by Interfax.
In a statement on CNN, John Kirby, the spokesperson for the White House, mentioned that the administration is currently in the process of gathering information about the situation and thus refrained from making any comments at that time. The State Department, when contacted for a response, did not provide an immediate reply.
